There is an available whistle-blower internship in the catch 22, anyone interested?
If we assume there would be some available internships in some interesting fields. Where would you like to work: e.g.: politics, economics, associations etc…? First you need to answer the question in the job description. Are you a person who would make public disclosure of corruption? In politics it may differ a little bit, e.g. Are you disposed to tell people what the government does not want to tell public? If you want to be a successor of for example Mr. J.A., do you have the capability of hacking skills and those n*ts to leak them? Are you into science and able to deal with nuclear technical documents which could detect scientific misconduct?
So your answer may neither be yes or no, but the question what motivates those people to be whistle-blowers? What is ethically right or wrong in executing “secret” information? Despite the benefits of increased transparency and accountability it often has brought social outcast to those ones who snitched. There are some protection measureson the part of the states who give whistle blowers courage and anonymity, in the United States there is a statutory action since 1989 called Whistle-blower Protection Act. However, if we look into historythose who hazard the consequences of whistle blowing “quit” their life’s on a very unpleasant way.
Additionally, in history there were not only male whistle-blowers. In the near future three very important and brave women were also involved into whistle blowing. A single-parenting motherwho fight off against FIFA. The Stepanov familywho risked their lives to expose Russia’s doping regime. Even more recent the “Apple Intern” who wrote a book about working conditions at Apple.
“Why should we adopt or reject particular ethical values and principles to guide our actions or the actions of individual and collective entities in context of global relations and interaction? But on what grounds should we accept one account of what are the correct ethical values over another?”
Kimberly Hutchings, Global Ethics, 2010
You should decide if you want to apply for this job or not? Sense of responsibility? Different way of leadership? Courage?
